Few people know this, because we only ever sing the first verse. But read
the end of the third verse and you’ll see why “The Star-Spangled
Banner” is not just a musical atrocity, it’s an intellectual and moral
one, too:
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
